No smoking gun, but the preponderance of evidence points to smartphones, not economics, as the culprit for the global drop in fertility:
• In the US and UK, births fell first and fastest in areas that got 4G earliest
• Birth rates were stable in the US, UK and Australia until 2007; in France and Poland until 2009; in Mexico and Indonesia until 2012; in Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal until 2013-15
Each of these inflection points matches local smartphone adoption (see picture).
• The younger the age group, the sharper the drop.
• in-person socialising among young adults is dropping. In SK, by 50% in 20 years
• Sexual dysfunction is higher among heavy social media user
• Effect is largest in culturally traditional societies — Middle East, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa
• Decline holds across countries hit hard by GFC 2008 and those not hit, fast-growing and not growing.

We’ve got another really fun 9b, this one specifically trained for tool calling and agentic coding workflows in @NousResearch Hermes agent.
Happy to report that it crushes, and as a 9b it runs on super affordable hardware.
We also hit this one with some coding domain-specific training, and it scored a 53.33% on SWE bench on a slice of 200 samples!
To me, I was really shocked to see this high of a score on a 9B model in swe, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that’s nipping at the heels of the Gemma 4 series, much larger models on this particular benchmark…
It also crushes the HermesAgent-20 benchmark, scoring an 85 vs the base model’s 71!

Violence at community scale often seems to result from disintermediation. A privileged group is removed from the suffering of a minority group, and relies only upon the reports and actions of intermediaries. The intermediaries, because concerned about losing the trait of the privileged group, filter their reports of the suffering and of their actions and the minority’s reactions. The positions of the privileged group and the minority group harden into moral outrage as misunderstandings escalate into retaliation…
An apparent implication is that members of privileged groups have a moral obligation not to turn away from or buffer themselves from the suffering of minority groups on which they depend even indirectly. A direct channel for communication might avoid violence that would otherwise occur.

Just had my first encounter with LLM customer service bots in the wild and it was an unmitigated disaster. Hallucinated an issue that didn’t exist, which the human it passed the issue to then spent the majority of time tracking down, even though I explained it was made up.
